Regional or country eSIM: which should you buy?

Planning a trip that crosses borders? You have two choices: a country eSIM that works in one country, or a regional eSIM that covers several countries on one plan. Here's how to pick.
Country eSIM
A plan that works in one country only.
- Best for: trips to a single destination.
- Why: usually the lowest price per GB, and often a wider choice of plan sizes.
- Keep in mind: if you cross a border, you'll need another plan for the next country.
Regional eSIM
A plan that works across a group of countries, such as Europe or Southeast Asia.
- Best for: trips that cross borders, like a rail trip through Europe or island-hopping in Asia.
- Why: one install, one plan, data that keeps working as you cross into the next country.
- Keep in mind: the price per GB can be a little higher than a single-country plan. Always check the list of covered countries.
How to choose
Ask yourself three questions:
- How many countries am I visiting? One country: go for a country plan. Two or more: compare a regional plan against buying separate country plans.
- How long in each? A long stay in one country plus a quick stop in another can work out cheaper as two separate plans.
- Is every country covered? Check the coverage list of a regional plan before you buy, especially for smaller countries.
A quick example
Say you're spending 10 days across France, Italy and Spain. A Europe regional plan means one eSIM that just works as you travel. Three separate country plans would mean three installs and managing three sets of data.
Now say you're spending two weeks in Japan with no other stops. A Japan country plan is the simpler and usually cheaper choice.
Good to know
- You can install more than one eSIM on most phones, and switch between them in your settings.
- With SimOrbit, you can top up an eSIM if you need more data, without reinstalling.
