Why you need to turn on data roaming for your travel eSIM

One of the most common questions we get is: "Why do I need to turn on data roaming? Won't that cost me a fortune?"
Short answer: turning on roaming for your travel eSIM is safe and won't add charges. Here's why.
Why a travel eSIM roams
A travel eSIM is issued by a provider that partners with local networks in your destination. When your phone connects to one of those networks, it sees itself as a visitor, which technically counts as roaming.
If data roaming is off on that eSIM line, your phone refuses to connect. That's the number one reason a travel eSIM shows signal but no internet.
Why it won't cost extra
Your SimOrbit plan is prepaid. You've already paid for a set amount of data. Roaming on the eSIM just uses that data. There's no bill afterwards and no hidden per-MB charge.
The setting that matters: your home SIM
The roaming you want to avoid is on your home SIM. That's where expensive roaming bills come from. So:
- SimOrbit eSIM: data roaming on.
- Home SIM: data roaming off.
How to set it up
iPhone
- Go to Settings → Mobile Service.
- Tap your SimOrbit line and turn Data Roaming on.
- Tap your home line and make sure Data Roaming is off.
- Set Mobile Data to your SimOrbit line and turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching.
Android
- Open your SIM settings (on Samsung, Settings → Connections → SIM manager).
- Choose the SimOrbit eSIM for mobile data and turn roaming on for it.
- Make sure roaming is off for your home SIM.
Still not connecting?
Restart your phone, or turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds and off again. If that doesn't help, see our eSIM troubleshooting guide.
